Eldepryl medication

Parkinson's disease is a chronic and progressive movement illness. The symptoms of Parkinson’s disease cannot be completely cured and get worse over time. The causes or this disease are not fully understood. The cure for this disease is not created. Still there are certain effective treatments for this disease which can be helpful in improving the quality of life of a patient.

The disease causes the failure to function and ruining of vital nerve cells in the brain, called neurons. It is known that some of the ruined neurons produce dopamine chemical. Dopamine forwards messages to the part of the cerebrum that responds for normal movement and coordination.

When Parkinson’s disease progresses, the amount of dopamine becomes insufficient and the control over movement gets lost by a person.

Common motor signs of Parkinson’s disease include: tremor of the hands, legs, chest, arms, jaw and face, slowness of movement, rigidity of the limbs, impaired coordination, loss of balance.

Eldepryl is an oral medication indicated to treat disability to have normal motion due to stiffness or sudden switching caused by Parkinson’s disease. Eldepryl does not cure the actual cause of the movement difficulties, it treats only tremor, muscle stiffness, loss of normal motion. It improves ability to move, walk, dress, exercise.

This medication is usually combined with other medicines for the treatment of Parkinson’s disease.

The main component of Eldepryl is Selegiline. It belongs to the class of drugs called MAO inhibitors. Actually it is a selective irreversible MAO-B inhibitor.

Selegiline slows the breakdown of neurotransmitters including dopamine, norepinephrine, and serotonin in the cerebrum.

This medication should be consumed orally twice a day with meals. It is recommended to take Selegiline in the first part of the day to avoid sleeping problems which it may cause.

The dose is chosen by a doctor with accordance to the severity of the symptoms caused by Parkinson’s disease. It may also depend on the response of a patient to the treatment.

The usual dose is 5 mg administered orally twice a day. The dose can be changed only with an approval of a caring doctor. It usually takes two weeks for the medicine to show its beneficial treatment results.

If you cannot see the results from the treatment, then it is advised to visit a doctor for consultation. Regular visits to a doctor should be planned during the treatment.

Possible diet changes or taking other medicines should be discussed with a doctor.

Before taking this medicine, inform your doctor about allergic reactions to drugs, foods or substances. It is also needed to discuss with a doctor the medical history especially if you suffer from heart problems, diabetes, bipolar disorder or schizophrenia.

Some medical products may interact with this medicine. Do not mix Eldepryl with antidepressants, other MAO inhibitors, appetite suppressants.

General recommendations also include:

Avoidance of foods and beverages that are high in tyramine, including: aged cheeses like bleu, cheddar, parmesan, dried meats and sausages, preserved fish, certain fermented foods, products containing soybeans, red wine, vermouth. Discuss your diet before Eldepryl therapy.
